YORK CONFERENCE May 23rd, 2010

Congratulations on a super day. It was very successful indeed and I could see people fired up. Everyone clearly found something useful. A ground breaking occasion.  I very much enjoyed the day too and met most interesting people not least the priest with whom I had lunch. Thank you for inviting me.

NEDFOS is making a very important contribution to Catholic education. What I found missing in the presentations, is the Headteacher's DUTY to train tomorrow's headteachers. Probably this is in fact being done but it was not explicit. I mentioned this to my priest lunch companion and hope that I did not upset him and others - but the lack of suitable Catholic candidates is indeed alarming and threatens the whole RC schools sustainability.

But I am sure that you have this in hand!

Dame Mary Richardson

Building Community/Building the Kingdom

“BUILDING COMMUNITY / BUILDING THE KINGDOM” has been created and collated by Anam Cara Educational Support with the support and contributions of many friends and colleagues in Church schools. The CD contains a huge selection of material that Church primary schools, rooted in their parish communities are invited to adapt to their local context. The material is not copyright and may be freely used or adapted by schools. Catholic primary schools, Joint Catholic and Church of England primary schools and Church of England primary schools will find this a most useful resource.

21st September 2009

200 teachers and support staff from all the Catholic primary schools in Wakefield LA gathered in Ripon Cathedral on Friday 18th September to the words of Neil Diamond’s powerful song – “Pretty Amazing Grace”. This unique training day organised by the Wakefield Partnership of nine Catholic Schools was facilitated by Frank McDermott, Anam Cara and former Director of Schools for the Diocese of Hallam. The day began early with pilgrimage prayers being said on the five coaches that departed from around Wakefield LA to make the journey to Ripon.

Mr Kieron Flood, headteacher of St Joseph’s Castleford and Chair of the Partnership concluded the day with a final prayer that the schools continue to touch lives as part of the mission of the Church, to serve the common good and to contribute to community cohesion.
The Wakefield Partnership of Catholic Primary Schools is one of the strongest in existence.

Photographs of the day are available on the gallery page of the Catholic Post website for the Diocese of Leeds.

Support for schools

I enjoyed the Conference day - it was a great opportunity to share experiences and hear about other Federations and Collaborations.
The website is very clearly set out and easy to navigate. I hope it proves a valuable support for schools exploring federation or collaborative activity.
I have looked at the report [section] and it is an accurate reflection of my report.

I hope that NCSL can continue to support your work and the activities you arrange as it is very valuable.

Meeting of staff
It would be interesting to meet up with staff at differing levels another year to enable sharing of practice and ideas.  The perception of federation from 'the shop floor' would be interesting to explore - LSA's/teachers/admin etc.  We now have the Foundation Stage teacher at Our Ladys mentoring our NQT Foundation teacher at St Joseph & St Teresa's.  It seems to be working well but it would be interesting to see how the actual staff involved feel. It's certainly a good way of sharing knowledge and expertise which is unique to federation and demonstrates to possibilities for sharing knowledge and expertise to benefit both schools.

Logo competition
The website looks much better. I do prefer the side menu bar & like the photo. It's easy to manoeuvre around it.
I hope we still have the pupil competition for a logo/picture.  I thought that was a good idea.

Children's Logo
I've looked at the 'nedfos' website and there seems to be very few pictures of what we are all about - children. I know there's always the problem of media permission from parents but it would be beneficial to make them central to the website. In our group in the 'attic' we talked about having a competition in schools where children come up with a logo to represent what we are about - working together and promoting Gospel values. This logo doesn't have to represent 'Federation' just a desire to work together and share good practice.
The best ideas and winning design could be used on the website (they could also be displayed in the cathedrals of the Diocese).

Apart from this, the website looks infomative and I like the links to other Catholic sites. Eventually it would be nice to see more projects shown which Catholic schools have worked jointly on e.g. joint INSET topics / themes etc.
